Mario has had a birthday. Zelda has had a birthday. Sonic has had a birthday. Now it’s time to celebrate the birth of one of Square Enix’s stellar console role playing games: Dragon Quest. Published originally as Dragon Warrior on May 27, 1986, this franchise is about to turn 25 years young.
Still in development as late as 2011 (Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 exclusively on 3DS), this franchise has about a dozen titles, plus spin offs and remakes. It had its not-so-humble beginnings on the MSX and the NES and Famicom. Recent releases, however, have seen time on the Wii and the PlayStation 2.
With the success of this franchise, it appears as though the Legend of Erdrick will continue to live on. In a graduating class with some of the most notable games of all times, it might be hard for DQ to compete, but so far, so good. To celebrate the occasion, the first three games of the series are going to be released as a Nintendo Wii compilation. Look for it in September of 2011.
