Recently video gaming humorists, Dorkly, held an informal poll to determine which Super Nintendo Entertainment System game was—in their fans’ opinions—the greatest game of all time. With such an immense library from which to choose, it had the makings of a very interesting poll.
Voting was done via the Dorkly website and the results were recalculated every five minutes. The competition was set up as a head to head match up between two classic SNES games with voters selecting their favorite of the two competitors within the match. Totals were calculated based on the number of times the game won its match, and the number of total matches, with less popular games being shuffled away from the head to head lineup.
The games selected for the battles went all across the board, covering multiple genre. It was common to see Final Fantasy II or the like pitted against Final Fight or Tecmo’s Super Bowl. Mario Kart could conceivably face off against Chrono Trigger, Aladdin, or Mega Man X. Games that were off the beaten track, such as the Cool Spot and Ogre Battle made appearances, and Clay Fighter, the Secret of Evermore and the Illusion of Gaia popped up more than once. It was really anybody’s game, so to speak.
With less than 24 hours to go, the top five games were separated by only a 10% voting margin…this with over 700,000 votes in place. Leading the pack was the Legend of Zelda with a slim margin over Super Mario World…which held a slim margin over Super Mario Kart…which was barely beating Donkey Kong Country. Super Metroid was some distance behind in fifth, but still making a great showing with a 79% ratio.
