The top consumer complaint for the original Game Boy from Nintendo was the monochromatic color palette. It's top competitors, the Sega Game Gear and Atari Lynx, both featured cooler looks and more vivid color than the Game Boy, even though the Game Boy still inevitably outsold them. Nintendo's answer was the Game Boy Color, launched in 1998 and featuring a full color screen.

The Game Boy Color, in comparison to the original Game Boy, was a bit taller and somewhat thicker. Together, these two similar systems sold almost 119 million copies, marking them with the only stamp of approval that truly counts in the gaming world - that of the consumer.

The Game Boy Color, discounting the new screen, was a novelty in handheld games for its time. It was the first handheld gaming system to be backward compatible. This made the library of games playable on the Game Boy Color enormous, since it could play its own original cartridges, as well as all of the other games from the previous Game Boy line. This idea gave it an appeal that put it leaps and bounds ahead of its competitors.

Other cool features that helped propel the Game Boy Color forward was its wireless linking port, even if it was only useful for a few games. It also offered the dedicated gamer four times as much memory as the original - a huge plus. For the fussy fashionistas in the crowd, the system also came in a variety of colors, including the fun Pokemon yellow, strawberry, grape and Kiwi.
