The N-Gage, by Nokia, is a handheld telephone that looks similar in design to the PSP and is also useful as a handheld gaming device. The initial device, which has evolved several times since, was released in October of 2003. The N-Gage was basically designed to be a mobile gaming system, but added cellular phone function in order to give it an edge over the Game Boy Advance, which failed. It was outsold by Game Boy Advance 100 to 1.
It's initial launch price was just under $300, but with slumping sales, the price quickly fell and distributors began offering their own rebates to move the product. At more than double the cost of the Game Boy Advance, but with about half the gaming library, the N'Gage and its cell phone function could not keep up.
In 2005, Nokia switched gears, having realized that the N-Gage was not going to keep up to other handheld systems. The Sony PSP and Nintendo DS had arrived to compete even further, and Nokia began marketing the N-Gage as a phone with great game-playing capabilities, as opposed to the other way around. Still, the last game for the system, Civilization, was released in 2006. The system is still sold in a few eastern countries.
There are many games available for the N-Gage, however, that were interesting and fun. There were fifty-eight full titles released for this console, some of which include X-Men Legends, Call of Duty and Bomberman. |
