Palm OS is an operating system that is used by many handheld devices. While not as popular as Symbian, Palm OS still is featured on hundreds of different mobile models. Palm OS is featured primarily on PDAs (personal digital assistant). For this reason, Palm is designed to be easy to use with a touch screen. Recently, Palm OS has broken into the smartphone market, having come a long way since its 1996 introduction. It has even been included in wristwatches and handheld gaming consoles, such as the Tapwave Zodiac, essentially a PDA and handheld game hybrid.
Like most other handheld devices with multiple functions, the PDAs featuring Palm could not compete with the more popular handheld gaming devices. They were forced to rely on marketing tactics centered on their other functions in order to succeed, advertising themselves as PDAs with gaming options, instead of vice versa.
Still, despite missing the mainstream gaming market, Palm offered many games compatible with its operating system that were popular and easily recognized. Some were reinventions of old classics, such as Hangman, Pipes, Checkers and Solitaire. Others were more original, such as Gagarin's Mission, Cowboy, and Claustrophobia. There was a host of knockoffs, also, of popular games such as Arkanoid. |
