The PSP, which stands for PlayStation Portable, is Sony's answer to the handheld video gaming scene. It was released just before Christmas of 2004 in Japan. It was novel upon its release for several reasons, most notably its use of the optical disc as a storage device, it being the first handheld video gaming system to do so. It was also applauded for its large viewing screen, and its easy connectivity. It could be connected to other PlayStation devices, such as the PS3 and other PSPs, as well as the Internet.

The Nintendo DS, its main competitor, kept a huge foothold in the market and has consistently outsold the PSP. However, the PSP has the distinction of being the most successful handheld gaming device ever sold that was NOT made by Nintendo, an acclaim worthy of some consideration. Like everything in the PlayStation stable, the PSP is under constant redesign. After the launch of its slimmer and lighter version in 2007, cleverly titled the PSP Slim & Lite, sales rose by 200% in North America. The series were technically noted by series numbers, with the original being the PSP 1000. The PSP 3000 and the PSP Go were the latest two series updates in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

A nice feature of the PSP is its "Remote Play" capabilities. Through a home network, the Internet, or a PlaySation 3's WLAN, a PSP is capable of performing many remote functions. The PSP is able to access much of the stored media on the PS3's HDD including pictures, music and videos. The PSP can also control simple functions of the PS3, such as turning it on and off from a remote site or controlling audio playback to a home theater. It is a very handy feature.
