Hexen is a doom style first person game released around the same time as doom the first time. it was a more fantasy versiion however and featured swords axes and spells rather than shotguns of the bfg. the gameplay is very familiar and easy to get in to however it can be challenging to get in close to the enemy to swing your chosen weapon. the controls are quite irritating at times with the standard 8 directions meaning that, on occasiojns enemies can hide in a placewhere you cannot get to them which is frustrating in the extreme. the sounds feel good at first however after a while it can end up grating badly when all enemies make the same noises constantly! the graphics are fairly standard for the time looking fair from a distance but reduced to meaningless pixels at close range. this is forgivable in a shooting game however when you are using hand weapons its quite annoying! however if you can lose yourself in the story you can forgive the low resolution graphics and un resposinve controls and get really quite sucked in to hunting down your foes with your naked weapon drawn and exploding the evil doers with hard core battle spells. it really does seem that, even though there are several things that let the game down you can forgive them all if you can get yourself immersed into the game and the story line then your imagination will do the rest and fill in the gaps in the graphical shortfalls. overall Hexen is a quality game that i thouroughly enjoyed playing but was slightly let down by the clunky controls and low quality graphics and sound. it is good enough to engage the player and keep you interested for a while. I do have to conclude however, by saying that, if you are reading this and are thinking that you would like to try something along these lines you could do a lot better than this by grabbing a copy of Hexen 2 or even Witchhaven 2 blood vengeance. both include similar gameplay and stories but without the deathknights turning into cardboard boxes when you rush to attack! five out of ten
an expansion pack was released for Hexen called death kings of the dark citadel. the name is more exciting than the actual content but it does have a few extra levels to give and is worth a look.
