Panasonic M2 = ultimate retro treasure hunt

posted by: Abandonman in Retrogames Hardware
Panasonic M2

Panasonic M2

The Panasonic M2, a home video gaming console unit created by 3DO, represents what is possibly the biggest treasure hunt in all of retro collecting. Many old school gamers love to hoard cartridges, controllers and even posters from their favorite gaming systems. It seems like there is always one or two elusive games that stop people from completing their sets. The Panasonic M2 is especially difficult. The main reason for this is that few people have even heard of it.

When the idea for the M2 was sold to Panasonic, it seemed like a good idea. The Panasonic M2 project was cancelled in 1997. 3DO’s Interactive Multiplayer Console had not done well on the market and Sony had recently released the original PlayStation. However, it was so close to being released, that ads were already out. Controllers were manufactured, there were prototype consoles, and some demo games and software. Finding them now requires some of the best detective work on the planet.

M2 fan, bitrate, is evidently a good detective. Scoring a console, some demo software and a controller, bitrate is recording his adventures in a forum that can be found here. Complete with tons of pictures and the complete story as told by the treasure hunter, this forum is the most detailed description of a mad hunt for this rare retro prize out there. Check it out.

There is an M2/3DO development system including computer and interface card on eBay right now, auction # 220782891313, for $3,333.33 or best offer. Nice, if you have that kind of scratch.
