The Grey Elephant's Curse

posted by: Abandonman in Retrogamer TV

Retro gaming is cool. It is fun. It is popular. But for something to be old and classic, it had to be fresh and new at some point. Products from the past shape those in the modern day, and modern day products and ideas shape those in the future. How much of that chain events do we take for granted?

What would life be like if there had never been a Nintendo or a Sega home gaming console? How would our gaming situation differ today, and what would the retro scene be like if we had never experienced 8-bit gaming in the eighties and nineties? If we were suddenly introduced to them, would they be new, fresh and fun? Would we value them for the classics they are or throw them out as inferior to modern games?

There are a lot of questions surrounding that scene, and unfortunately, Russians are forced to find answers to them. The Grey Elephant’s Curse is a documentary about the lacking of a video gaming industry in retro gaming Russia. The closest thing Russian gamers got to the 8-bit goodies we take for granted were poor clones from an outfit known as the Dendy…filled with glitches, malfunctions and just overall poor experiences.

You can see the entire 75 minute film on YouTube. It is a recommended film to anyone who really values their retro roots.
