The history of Dragon’s Crown

Dragon's Crown

Dragon's Crown

Unveiled at the 2011 E3 conference, Dragon’s Crown looks like a spiffy new game for the PS3 and the new PS Vita. This scrolling brawler by Vanillaware is primarily an action beat ‘em up with some role playing game elements to it. It has easy, pick up and play controls and a host of tough, playable characters…sort of like the brawlers of old.

There’s a reason for that. Dragon’s Crown was originally slated to be a SEGA Dreamcast game and most of its features still reflect the games of that generation for just that reason.

Initially, Princess Crown was released in 1997 for the SEGA Saturn. It was also an action-base role playing game. It tells the story of Princess Galadriel, as seen through the eyes of a little girl reading an adventure with her grandmother.

Odin Sphere and Muramasa: The Demon Blade are said to be spiritual successors to Princess Crown. Dragon’s Crown, the ACTUAL successor, was meant to be a Dreamcast title. Recently, many scrapped or partially completed projects from retro platforms are seeing completion and subsequent releases onto newer formats.

Even if it isn’t for the Dreamcast, Dragon’s Crown looks to be an interesting play. It is yet another statement about how the future of gaming seems to keep looking towards the past. Look for it in 2012 and read more here.
