The Commodore 64 was an early 8-bit home computer that was released in the early eighties and is now legendary for its fun computer game ports. During its lifetime, it sold over 17 million units and dominated the market for about four years shortly following its 1982 debut. One reason Commodore was so successful was the fact that it could be purchased at about any retail store, instead of the specialty electronic stores. Its ready availability made it seem perfect for anyone.
There were about 10,000 commercial software titles produced especially for the Commodore 64 and many of them were games. A wide variety of C64 emulators allow people with access to a modern PC to play these old games on newer machines that would be otherwise unable to convert the information successfully.
Commodore 64 games have recently seen an enormous resurgence, credited to Nintendo's Virtual Console. The popular game International Karate was one of the first C64 games to be offered on the Virtual Console, along with Uridium. The library has since expanded, and continues to grow every month. Two other exceptionally notable releases included Pitstop II and the Last Ninja.
With the right number of Wii points, a retro gamer can access many good old C64 games via the Virtual Console. California Games was an early release, both Boulder Dash and Jumpman were classic offerings, and Winter Games has been released to balance out the 2008 release of Summer Games II.
The fact the Commodore 64 held its own when it was first released was one testament to its value. The fact that people still spend their Wii points to access games that are sometimes older than they are is truly another! |
