MS-DOS Games News |
| Released: |
August 1980, 29 years ago |

MS-DOS is one of the most popular old operating systems for the personal computer. Many a computer game was programmed with DOS in mind - literally thousands. Marketed by Microsoft and short for Microsoft Disk Operating System, it was THE operating system of the 1980s. It was a text-driven system that was eventually replaced by Windows, which featured a much more user-friendly graphical user interface.
The contribution MS-DOS had on the gaming world is immeasurable. It was eventually abandoned in 2000, but modern computers still have an MS-DOS mode -which few computer users even know how to access, much less operate. What is a command prompt anyway?
There were so many games created for MS-DOS that it is practically impossible to list them all. Even only fully licensed titles, not counting clones, hacked warez games, or fanmade games, number beyond four digits. Today, these games are still coveted and many are still very fun and highly playable, even when compared to more recent releases. The problem is that they play poorly in the modern operating systems.
Enter - the emulator or slowdown device. Because MS-DOS games still hold such great appeal, programs such as DOSBOX have been developed to emulate the original MS-DOS system, allowing for the effective and smooth play of original MS-DOS games. Many of these games are archaic and have been released as abandonware. They can be found on many sites for free or for meager downloading fees. |
