Released in 2004, the Nintendo DS was the Cadillac of handheld gaming systems at one point. It featured a dual screen that opened and closed in a classic and simple clamshell design. The design was similar to the Game Boy Advance, but the dual screens were a real innovation. The DS's upper screen was the play screen, while the lower screen was a touch pad. In fact, the name DS refers in part to the Dual Screen.

The DS featured a built-in microphone system that allowed players to remain in contact with one another over short distances. The DS could also be connected to a wireless connection service that allowed numerous remote gamers to connect and share gaming experiences.

Like so many of Nintendo's gaming consoles, the Nintendo DS was a dynamic machine that has seen many changes. DS Lite was introduced in 2006. It is very similar to the originally styled machine, but it is smaller in size, lighter to hold, and features a brighter screen - hence a double meaning of the word "lite". After the Lite's introduction, the original style became affectionately termed the DS Phat.

All versions of the DS combined have sold almost 114 million copies. Its best-selling games include Nintendogs and a revamped Nintendo classic, the New Super Mario Bros.
