The popular Nintendo 64 was succeeded by Nintendo's funky GameCube, aptly named for its oddly perfect square appearance in September of 2001. The GameCube featured many new advancements in gaming consoles, which both hurt and hindered its sales.
The newest technology utilized by the GameCube was the disc storage method. Instead of using full-sized discs, similar to a DVD or audio CD, the GameCube used mini DVD discs. While this presented a convenient size and a host of storage space in a small unit, it also limited the GameCube's capabilities. Unlike its main rivals, Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox, the GameCube did not have the ability to play back standard audio CDs, nor could the machine be used as a DVD player for movies.
Some of its innovative features that were undeniably well-received included the Nintendo GameCube's variety of connectivity options, many of which enabled a gamer to play his or her old favorites from the past generation of consoles. The Gam Cube also officially supported online play and could connect to the Game Boy Advance. Truly, it could connect to nearly any device and also featured an absolute plethora of peripherals and input devices, making it a very popular console for the techy gamer. |
