Nintendo's Wii is primarily Nintendo's answer to the Xbox 360 by Microsoft and Sony's PlayStation 3. It appears to be a good answer, since the Wii has outsold its two counterparts worldwide to date.

The Wii offered many new and interesting features that made it a "must have" for console gamers. One of its most notable aspects was the Wii Remote wireless control that gave gamers more freedom than ever before while playing. Additionally, it could be used as a pointing device and also could sense movement in three dimensions. It had Internet connectivity, which made it easy to receive updates.

Additionally, the Wii is the direct successor to the GameCube. Perhaps noting Sony's success with "backwards compatible" models, Nintendo made certain that all official GameCube games were playable on the new Wii.

The Wii is certainly an interesting console for many reasons, including its name. Originally codenamed the Revolution, the name Wii seemed to have origins in Nintendo's intent for the game. Moreover, it was the first Nintendo console marketed outside of Japan to stand without featuring the company's official trademark. The company stated that: "Wii sounds like 'we, which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii."
