Sony's PlayStation 2, or PS2, is in fact the best selling console to date by a rather large margin. It's sleek black look offered a classic appeal to both younger gamers and the middle-aged gamer still looking to slide a stylish gaming console flawlessly into his home entertainment area. It is still releasing new games, despite the advent of more sophisticated systems, including the PS3.
The PS2, with its sleek and sexy appeal, was actually trimmed down in 2004, just before the release of their resurgent blockbuster hit, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. With over 17 million copies sold, this became the PlayStation 2's gem, and demands for the machine outdid production, creating a shortage of systems by Christmas of 2004. This issue was expounded when a ship from China "carrying a load of PS2s" was blocked from the UK due to a Russian oil tanker experiencing difficulties in the Suez Canal. To gain perspective on the impact these shipments had on the retail of these systems, sales dropped from over 70,000 a week to about 6,000 due to lack of product. The new Slimline system was smaller and quieter, and also featured a built-in Ethernet port. It removed the 3.5" expansion bay, however, an acceptable sacrifice according to Sony.
The PS2 comes with a nearly ridiculous raft of peripherals, some fairly mundane and others just plain weird. Resident Evil 4, for example, has a chainsaw controller. Microphones for music games such as SingStar are common, as are dance pads for games such as Dance, Dance Revolution. Of course, most people are familiar with Guitar Hero's popular guitar. There are many others that make the PS2 as unique as its games. |
