Following the PlayStation 2, Sony's PS3 is a sophisticated home video gaming console with a huge emphasis on online gaming. The PlayStation Network took online gaming under its wing with the release of the PS3, instead of leaving it up to individual game manufacturers to create links for online play. On top of the wonderful online gaming capabilities, the PS3 also has other intense multimedia functions, including the ability to handle the popular Blu-ray discs. In fact, the PlayStation 3 was the first Blu-ray 2.0 device on the market.
Similar to its grandfather, the PS2, the PlayStation 3 has gone through several remodels in its short years on the market. Sony is always vying to make the system more compact, sleeker and more stylish. Since it is backwards compatible and can play media from all models of PlayStation games, this small system can effectively replace several larger ones in the multimedia entertainment center, including the DVD player.
Ironically, the PS3 struggled upon its first release. Following riots and shootings outside of stores on its release date, the PS3 met with critical demerits for its high price and lackluster launch library. All critics and gamers could plainly see the machine's potential, but felt the PS3 was not living up to it. Since then, Sony has concentrated on an interesting gaming library, and the rise of the Blu-ray disc has bolstered sales and helped to put the PS3 where it needs to be. |
