Games for Windows is a new marketing project by Microsoft that was introduced in 2006 in partnership with the new Windows Vista operating system. It is a program that is also open to third party publishers, but still offers a type of brand to regulate the video gaming industry at home and during online play.
PC games that have basically received the Microsoft seal of approval will have "Games for Windows" conspicuously tattooed across the top of the original packaging. According to Microsoft, this boosted gaming sales, and also assured consumers of the game's value and compatibility. Other guarantees include an easy installation, support through multiple resolutions and aspect ratios, compatibility with Windows Vista Games Explorer, and support with parental controls.
Users can also take advantage of Games for Windows Live, featuring the Microsoft Live network for online play. It is a free service that is also used by Microsoft's home video gaming console, Xbox Live. Games Explorer is included with all Vista and Microsoft Windows 7 operating system to help users efficiently manage their games.
Many popular titles have earned the "Games for Windows" title from Microsoft. THQ's Company of Heroes was a good seller in 2006, as was Age of Empires III. 2007 saw the release of many expansions and add-ons for current titles, such as Age of Empires, Zoo Tycoon, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Halo and Football Manager. It also saw BioShock come to life. 2008 found another Civilization game on the market, as well as more Grand Theft Auto and Warhammer. In 2009, notable releases have included another great Wolfenstein game and Transformers. |
